BC Softball Snaps Losing Streak With Split at Milligan College
 
Milligan, T.N. – The Brevard College women’s softball team snapped their current losing streak on Monday afternoon, as the Tornados split the double-header with Milligan College. The Tornados won game one 2-0 before falling in the final inning of game two 7-6.
 
Game 1: Brevard 2, Milligan 0
 
In game one, the Tornados out hit the Lady Buffaloes of Milligan College and used a stellar pitching performance by sophomore hurler Jennifer Gift to come pick up the 2-0 win.
 
The Tornados scored both runs in the final two innings of play to come away with the win.
 
In the sixth inning, BC short-stop Kristina Clayton singled in pitch-runner Jennifer Brown from second to put the Tornados on the board with an early 1-0 lead.
 
The Tornados added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning, as Brown had an RBI double to put BC up 2-0 nothing heading into Milligan’s final at bat.
 
Brevard’s Gift (6-16) picked up the complete game shutout win, as she allowed only three hits while striking out three over seven innings.
 
The loss went to Milligan’s Musick, as the Lady Buffaloes starter allowed two runs on five hits while striking out eight BC hitters over seven innings.
 
BC’s Jennifer Brown was 1-1 with a double, an RBI and a run scored, while Clayton was 1-3 with an RBI. Senior centerfielder Kristin Tettemer was 1-3 with a run scored, while Amber Clontz and Katie Brown each had a hit apiece for the game.
 
Game 2: Milligan 7, Brevard 6
 
In game two, the Tornados got on the board first, but gave up two runs in the final inning of play to fall to the Lady Buffaloes 7-6.
 
BC scored first, pushing across three runs in the top of the first inning. In the opening frame, second-baseman Katie Thornburg had an RBI double, while Kristin Tettemer had an RBI single. Thornburg would later score on a double steal play in which she stole home, to put the Tornados up early 3-0.
 
However, Milligan answered in the bottom half of the first, as the Lady Buffaloes scored four runs in the inning highlighted by a Poindexte bases clearing triple, which drove in three runs on the play.
 
The Tornados took back the lead in the top half of the second, scoring two runs on a Sarah Carlos single to put BC ahead 5-4.
 
After Milligan tied the score up at 5-5 on a Sharpe RBI double in the bottom of the third, the Tornados again went back on top in the top of the seventh.
 
Brevard scored on a Jennifer Brown RBI single which plated Katie Thornburg to put the Tornados up one at 6-5.
 
Yet the home team did not go away, as the Lady Buffaloes scored two runs on a two out Smith double to center to give Milligan the 7-6 win.
 
Milligan’s Musick picked up the win in relief, as she pitched the final four innings of play, giving up one unearned run on four hits.
 
BC’s Gift (6-17) was saddled with the loss, as the right-handed hurler gave up seven runs on 13 hits while walking five hitters in 6.2 innings of work.
 
At the plate, BC was led by freshman Sarah Carlos, who was 2-4 with two RBIs and a run scored, while Thornburg was 1-4 with a double, an RBI and two runs scored. Kristina Clayton was 2-4 with a run scored, while senior Lindsey Morgan was 2-3 for the game.
 
The Tornados (9-25) will return to action on Wednesday, April 16, as BC will travel to Tigerville, S.C. to face off with the Lady Crusaders of North Greenville University. The double-header is slated for a 2 p.m. start time.
