Tusculum Sweeps Brevard in Softball Action
 
Brevard, N.C. – The Brevard College women’s softball team fell to another SAC foe on Saturday afternoon, dropping both games of the double-header to the Tusculum Lady Pioneers. Despite outhitting the Lady Pioneers in game one, the Tornados fell to Tusculum 7-6. In game two, Tusculum defeated BC 6-2 to complete the sweep.
 
Game 1: Tusculum 7, Brevard 6
 
In game one the Tornados pounded out 11 hits, but would come up just short falling to the visiting Lady Pioneers of Tusculum College 7-6.
 
Tusculum started the scoring in the second, as short-stop Ashley Basilicato hit a solo homerun to lead off the inning and but the Lady Pioneers up 1-0.
 
However, Brevard answered with four runs in the bottom half of the inning to pull ahead 4-1 after two innings of play. Centerfielder Kristin Tettemer led off the inning with a double, which was followed by a single by catcher Katie Brown putting runners on first and third with no outs.
 
Brown then stole second, while on the play Tettemer went streaking home to score and tie the score up at 1-1. The next two BC runs would come by way of two Tusculum errors why the third run came on a Kristina Clayton double to score Lindsey Morgan from third.
 
Tusculum did not go away as the Lady Pioneers put up a six spot in the top of the fourth to pull ahead of the Tornados 7-4. Tusculum pounded out six hits, four of which were doubles, in the inning which was highlighted by a Jennifer Turley two-run homerun.
 
BC fought hard to the end, plating two runs and loading the bases in the bottom of the seventh, before Tusculum pitcher Megan DuBois shut the door and sealed the 7-6 win.
 
TC’s DuBois got the win, going the distance allowing six runs, one of which was earned, on 11 hits while striking out three BC hitters.
 
BC sophomore Jennifer Gift (5-15) was handed the loss, as she gave up seven runs on eight hits in four innings of work.
 
At the plate, BC was led by Tettemer, who was 2-4 with a double and two runs scored. Designated hitter Amber Clontz was 2-4 with a double and run scored, while fellow senior Aimee Rogers was 1-4 with two RBIs and a run scored.
 
For Tusculum, Shanda Kimbrough was 2-3 with a double, a RBI and a run scored, while catcher Makenzie Loy was 1-3 with two RBIs and a run scored. Basilicato and Turley were both 1-3 with a homerun.
 
Game 2: Tusculum 6, Brevard 2
 
In game two of the twin bill on Saturday afternoon, the Tornados fell behind early and couldn’t dig themselves out of their hole falling to the Lady Pioneers 6-2.
 
Tusculum scored two runs in the top of the third on a Racheal Wilburn single and then three runs on a Jennifer Turley bases clearing double in the top of the fourth to pull ahead of the Tornados 5-0 early.
 
The Lady Pioneers pushed the lead to 6-0 in the top of the sixth as Wilburn knocked in her second RBI of the day.
 
In the bottom half of the sixth, short-stop Kristina Clayton laid down a well-placed bunt to score Lindsey Morgan from third and put the Tornados on the board.   In the same inning, Sarah Carlos would later still home as the Lady Pioneers tried to pick off Katie Thornburg off first, to cut the Tusculum lead to four at 6-2.
 
However, the Tornados failed to score another run in the game as Tusculum held on for the 6-2 victory.
 
Tusculum hurler Ashley Whitehead picked up the complete game win, as she allowed two runs on five hits over the seven inning contest.
 
BC’s Gift (5-16) was saddled with the loss, as the right-hander gave up four runs on four hits over three innings of work.
 
Brevard catcher Katie Brown was 2-3 on the day, while Clayton was 1-2 with an RBI. Senior Lindsey Morgan was 1-3 with a run scored.
 
For Tusculum, designated hitter Samantha Cole was 3-4 with a run scored, while Turley was 3-4 with a double, three RBIs and a run scored. Centerfielder Wilburn was 2-4 with three RBIs in the game.
 
The Tornados (8-24) next scheduled contest will be on Monday, April 14, as BC will travel to Tennessee to take on Milligan College. The double-header is slated for a 2 p.m. start time.
