The 2008 season is a season of firsts for the Brevard College softball program. The Tornados will be in their first season as provisional members of the South Atlantic Conference, in which BC will play a full SAC schedule this season.

“I am extremely excited about this season and this program entering into the South Atlantic Conference,” commented head coach Britne’ Stubbs. “With the SAC being one of the best Division II conferences in the southeast and us playing a full SAC schedule, it will be a tough challenge for our squad this season, a challenge that we are ready to accept.”

The Tornados will also be under the direction of first year head coach Britne’ Stubbs, who has brought with her both experience as a coach and player as well as winning attitude built upon hard work and determination.

The Tornados will look to their four seniors – Kristin Tettemer (Newport, N.C.), Lindsey Morgan (Mt. Holly, N.C.), Aimee Rogers (Mebane, N.C.) and Amber Clontz (Hickory, N.C.) for leadership both on and off the playing field, as they will be an integral part in helping the young-talented Tornado squad continue the transition to the NCAA Division II level.

“I have given the reigns to the seniors to be the leaders of this team, particularly on the field,” added Coach Stubbs. “They have responded by setting the example of hard work and determination in practice since day one.”

Juniors Amber Klein (Grovetown, Ga.), Beth Brooker (Fayetteville, Ga.), Katie Thornburg (Lincolnton, N.C.) and Jessica Crocker (Hendersonville, N.C.) will all see a considerable amount of playing time throughout the 2008 season. Klein, a versatile player with a good glove, will see action at both the first-base and catcher positions, while Brooker and Crocker are a part of a very fast outfield. Thornburg will line-up at second-base for the Tornados and will be looked upon to contribute offensively for BC this season.

Sophomore Kristina Clayton (Graham, N.C.) will hold down the short-stop position for the Tornados, as she as great range and a strong throwing arm. Twin sisters Katie Brown (Conover, N.C.) and Jennifer Brown (Conover, N.C.) will be asked to provide both power and consistency in the Tornado line-up, while also manning the catcher and third base positions, respectively.

Freshman Sarah Carlos (Eagle River, AK) will see time at the first-base position and has the ability to make an immediate impact this season for the Tornados as she transitions to the college game.

The Tornados while young are solid from top to bottom as well as from every position across the field. There is speed at the top of the order with Tettemer, Clayton and Brooker, as well as a number of solid contact hitters throughout the remainder of the line-up.

On the rubber, the Tornados will look to senior Aimee Rogers and sophomore Jennifer Gift to ward off the opponents offensive line-up, as the two compliment each other with two different styles of pitching.

The depth of the pitching core is provided by sophomore Rachel Montgomery and freshman Megan Schulz, as both will see plenty of time in the circle for the Tornados this season, bolstering the bullpen and providing relief action.

“The girls have worked so hard in the fall season to get to this point, grasping my coaching style and philosophy, and we are looking forward to seeing all that work pay-off on the field, between the white lines this season,” remarked Coach Stubbs.
