FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
WHEN CAN I MOVE INTO THE RESIDENCE HALLS?
The residence halls open for all new students at 9:00 a.m. on Saturday August 25.
Returning students can begin moving into the residence halls at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, August 27.
Exceptions to this date are only granted for returning students who have been asked to return to campus early for an official Campus purpose (fall sport athlete, RA, SA, Orientation Leaders, BCE Leaders, etc). Rare exceptions are made for extenuating circumstances and only occur by approval of the Dean of Students. Students that are granted an exception to move in early must pay a $50.00 per day early arrival fee.
WHAT FURNITURE WILL BE IN MY ROOM WHEN I ARRIVE? This can vary depending on the residence hall. The rooms in Beam Residence Hall are furnished with 2 beds, 2 two drawer dressers, 2 wardrobes with 2 drawers, 2 chairs and 2 desks. Taylor, East Jones and Green Hall are the same with the exception of closets instead of wardrobes. West Jones has 2 beds, 2 three drawer dressers, a walk in closet, 2 chairs and 2 desks. North Village rooms are furnished with 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 chairs and 2 wardrobes with 2 drawers. South Village rooms are furnished with 2 beds, 2 desks, 2 chairs, 1-2 dressers, and 2 closet areas. The only exception to this are the single rooms in West Jones and South Village which are furnished for one person. Taylor, Beam, Green and Jones Hall and South Village rooms are equipped with a microwave/refrigerator unit.
WHAT ARE THE ROOM MEASUREMENTS/DIMENSIONS OF MY ASSIGNED ROOMBecause so many of the Residence Halls are different as are the rooms within, we are not able to provide exact measurements of the rooms, however, the standard size of the residence hall rooms is approximately 12 feet by 14 feet. We suggest that you wait until you arrive to buy carpet or bring carpet with the appropriate tools necessary to cut it to fit your room.
ARE LOFTS ALLOWED? It depends on where you live. If you live in Taylor, Beam, Green or East Jones the beds are designed to be bunked, but not lofted. The furniture in West Jones is designed to be lofted with a special kit that we can provide you, other lofts are not permitted. If you live in the Village you can build your own loft. All loft constructions must be approved by our maintenance staff for safety. All lofts must be freestanding and no part of a furnishing may be attached, wedged or secured in any manner to the ceiling, floor or walls of the room. Please bring all necessary tools for construction as our Residence Life Staff is unable to provide this equipment.
IS CABLE TV AVAILABLE IN MY ASSIGNED ROOM? Yes. Basic cable is provided. Students have approximately 50 channels available to them at no additional charge. Students merely need to bring a television and cable wire.
MAY I HAVE A PHONE IN MY ROOM? Yes. In fact, the college expects students to use their in-room telephones for messages from the College. You or your roommate will need to supply a phone. There are phone jacks in the rooms. Voicemail is also provided for each student. Information on how to setup your voicemail can be found online and will be in your room when you arrive on campus. Phone numbers will be distributed upon arrival, if not indicated on your housing assignment letter. Please note that the Division of Campus Life does not give out student’s telephone numbers during the year due to safety and privacy issues.
ARE SINGLE or PRIVATE ROOMS AVAILABLE? No single or private rooms will be available at this time. Single or private rooms are held for students with special medical needs or physically challenged students. Single rooms are not granted for Attention Deficit Disorders or other learning disabilities; allergies and/or asthma. There is an extra fee that will be billed to you each semester for a private room.
WHAT IF I DON’T LIKE MY HOUSING/ROOMMATE ASSIGNMENT? Students will have the opportunity to change rooms after our “Housing Freeze” which allows us to get a solid head count at the beginning of each semester. The freeze is usually lifted 2 weeks after classes begin. At this time “Friendly Moving Day” will be held, students will be allowed switch rooms for any reason one final time at no charge. Room changes may not be permitted after this period. Emergency moves are sometimes granted with a processing charge of $50.00 and special permission from the Housing Office. Any moves made without the approval of the Housing Office can result in a $75.00 fine. NO MOVES WILL BE MADE PRIOR TO THE HOUSING FREEZE ENDING.
MAY I BRING A PET? No pets except for fish are allowed in the residence halls. There is a $75.00 fine per incident for having an animal, other than fish, in a residence hall.
MAY I REMOVE THE COLLEGE FURNITURE IN MY ROOM? All college furniture must remain in the room. Storage is not available on campus. Students are responsible for all furniture that is in the room when they arrive.
IS STORAGE AVAILABLE ON CAMPUS? No. Students may contact a storage facility in the Brevard area if they wish to store any belongings. The following are storage companies in the immediate Brevard area: Brevard Moving and Storage Co. (828) 883-2400. Pisgah Mini Storage: 883-8171. Others are listed in the Transylvania County phone directory.
WHAT APPLIANCES ARE NOT ALLOWED? Residence Halls have varying designs and construction. The College reserves the right to impose reasonable requirements with respect to the type and use of appliances or equipment students may bring into the residence halls. Some examples of items NOT permitted are listed below; however, this list is not necessarily all-inclusive:

extension cords with multiple outlets (UL approved surge protectors and power strips are permitted).
(Note: All rooms have microfridges except for North Village where there is a common kitchen area. Students are prohibited from having additional microwave ovens or refrigerators in their rooms except for students living in the North Village.)
WILL TRANSPORTATION FROM THE ASHEVILLE AIRPORT BE AVAILABLE?Typically students arrive with family and/or have made prior transportation arrangements from the airport. However, in the event a student needs assistance in obtaining transportation to/from the airport, they should contact Campus Life. Although Campus Life can not guarantee transportation to/from the Asheville Airport, it will assist you in making transportation arrangements. During the school year, Campus Life does offer shuttle service for Thanksgiving, Christmas and Spring Breaks to the Asheville Airport and Bus Station. Commercial shuttle service from the Asheville Airport to Brevard College can be obtained through City Cab (884-9612).
