Campus Security

Campus Security's goal is to maintain a safe environment for the entire College community. We are committed to the philosophy of community accountability.  We address such things as fire safety, personal emergencies, health crises, lost and found items, parking issues, and many other matters that affect all of us personally and as a community.

Members of the Brevard College Community are encouraged to promptly and accurately report any safety issues, emergencies, or potential violations of campus policies. Reports can be made directly to Campus Security at 828-577-9590 (24 Hour Emergency Line).

VEHICLE REGISTRATION:

All BC students are required to have a valid parking decal for each year they are enrolled. Each semester upon registration, a student's account will be billed $80 automatically for a parking decal.

If a student will not have their car on campus for a certain semester, they can opt out of this charge during the first five days of class by filling out and returning the Student Profile / Vehicle Registration / Parking Waiver form to the Campus Life office. The deadlines to waive the parking fee are Wednesday, August 31, 2011, and Wednesday, January 18, 2012.

If a student opts out of having a vehicle but later decides to bring a car to campus, the student would need to stop by the Campus Life Office in Coltrane right away to pick up a parking permit. **Please note that students that opt out of having a vehicle on campus and are found with a vehicle on campus will be issued a $300 non-appealable ticket.**

Student parking is prohibited in the grass, along curbs, and in any designated spaces (Faculty, AD, Clinic, Visitor, Security, Facilities).

Student parking is only allowed in white-lined parking stalls or in gravel parking areas.

All permits must be properly displayed from the rear view mirror or a ticket may be issued for failing to properly display a parking permit.

For further directions, please reference the Student Handbook and/or contact Campus Security. Please visit the Campus Life office in Coltrane for any parking ticket appeals.
Emergency Call Boxes

All designated emergency call boxes will dial directly to Campus Security. All designated emergency call boxes will have a unique phone number that can be traced to the specific location of that call box. Checks of all designated emergency call boxes will be performed quarterly to make sure the equipment is operating properly.

A false activation of a designated emergency call box includes, but is not limited to: mechanical or electronic failure, malfunction due to installation, accidental activation by a person or intentional false activation by a person. Intentional false activations will be investigated in accordance with North Carolina General Statute 14-286.2: Interfering with emergency communication.

Trespassing

A person who has been given a trespass warning may appeal by submitting a written appeal to the DOS within ten days of the date the warning was given. The written appeal should include the person's reason for being on campus at the time, the person's future need to be on campus, and any other information the person wishes the DOS to consider. The warning remains in effect during the appeal.

The DOS shall review the written appeal and the record of the warning to determine if the warning was imposed in compliance with these procedures. The DOS may accept, reject, or modify the warning in a written decision that will be mailed to the appellant. If the period of the trespass is 30 days or less, the DOS decision is final.  The DOS shall inform the person in writing of the decision within 10 working days and, if the period of the trespass warning exceeds 30 days, the person has the right to appeal to the President.

If the person wishes to appeal the DOS decision, he/she may do so by submitting a written appeal to the President within ten days of receipt of the DOS decision. The DOS decision remains in effect during the appeal. Upon receipt of the written appeal, the President will set a date, time, and place for an informal hearing and advise the person in writing at least ten days before the hearing that the person may attend and present relevant evidence and witnesses. The officer who issued the trespass warning shall also be notified and will attend the hearing and may be questioned. Attendance at the hearing will be restricted to the trespassed person, the issuing officer, and others having personal knowledge of the events.  The President will review all the evidence and may accept, reject or modify the DOS decision.  The President will notify the person in writing of the decision and that the decision is the final College decision. The decision and notice of appeal rights should be sent by certified mail; return receipt requested within fifteen (15) working days of the hearing.

Officers may contact Brevard Police Department to arrest an individual when he/she has been warned and refuses to leave or when he/she is detained on campus property and records indicate a previous trespass warning notice.
