The primary purpose of counseling at Brevard College is the prevention of serious problems, as well as providing an opportunity for personal growth and development. Someone once said, “If you can’t calm the waters, learn to ride the waves.” Recognizing that the college years are a time of transition and development, counselors at the Stamey Counseling Center are committed to helping students navigate the difficult transitions and changes in their life journey. At the Stamey Counseling Center, counselors are available to listen, support, and encourage you while you meet and explore the challenges in your life. Sometimes students feel overwhelmed and have difficult decisions to make. Counseling is designed to help you through those times. Through counseling you have the opportunity to learn more about yourself and gain new skills, change unwanted patterns and build upon your strengths and abilities.

Who Is Counseling For?

Everyone can benefit from counseling. Students often seek counseling to deal with relationships, stress and/or anxiety, problems with parents, loneliness, dating and sex, uncomfortable feelings about themselves, academic difficulties, career decisions and many other concerns. The Stamey Counseling Center provides students with short-term academic, career and personal counseling. The College Chaplain is also available for counseling, especially with regards to spiritual matters and faith development. The Director of the Career Center Services assists students in all aspects of their career development process (see Career Center Services for more information). Our services are free to Brevard College students, faculty and staff.

Confidentiality

Everything you discuss with your counselor is kept under strict confidence. No information about an individual or group can be released to anyone without the expressed consent of the client. All records are kept in our office and are not accessible to anyone else on campus. We will ask for your written permission before we release any information about you (except in rare and unusual circumstances such as a court subpoena or a life-threatening situation).

Making an Appointment

You may come by the counseling center or call (828) 884-8129 to set up an appointment. Individual sessions are usually scheduled on a weekly basis for 50 minutes each. The number of sessions varies widely depending on the preference of the client and the availability of the counselor. The counseling center is open 8:30 am- 4:30 pm; Monday – Friday. Because of the nature of personal counseling, additional hours and flexibility in scheduling appointments may be made available to students in an effort to accommodate your schedule.

Emergencies

For crisis or emergency situations during office hours, come to or call the counseling center. After hours or during the weekend, contact your Residence Hall Director, Campus Security, or Medical Services. These offices work together to handle after-hour campus emergencies, and counseling services are notified as required.
