The Brevard College Campus Security Department is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year (including holidays).
Our Department was established to maintain a safe environment for the entire College community. It is our mission to make certain that everyone feels secure at our school, and it is our intention to insure that everyone’s experience at Brevard College is as safe, enjoyable and productive as possible. We are committed to the concept of a community policing philosophy, and as such, we direct our efforts toward preventing crime and providing assistance, as much as we do toward enforcing the law. We are truly here to serve and protect the interests of the College population, and that includes addressing such things as fire safety, personal emergencies, health crises, and many other matters that affect us personally and as a community.
The Director of Security is a retired FBI Agent with over 30 years of law enforcement experience in both public and corporate sectors. Our Department has established a close liaison with the Brevard Police Department and the Transylvania County Sheriff’s Office. We maintain a direct radio link with both those agencies, and the College’s Director of Security meets regularly with the Brevard Chief of Police, as well as with the Transylvania County Sheriff. College security personnel fully cooperate with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies, and assist in enforcing all applicable laws.
Students and other members of the Brevard College Community are encouraged to promptly and accurately report all incidents of criminal activity, emergencies, infractions of Campus rules and regulations, and safety issues. They can make those reports directly to Campus Security at 884-5979 (24 Hour Emergency Line) or through the Office of the Dean of Students. The Dean’s office and Security personnel work closely together to ensure that security issues are appropriately addressed in a timely manner.
Students are encouraged to be responsible for their safety and the safety of others, through regularly scheduled meetings with the Campus Life Professional Staff, who reside in the residence halls. At the beginning of each semester, senior members of the Security and Campus Life staff meet with students in their residence halls to explain safety and security measures that are in place on the Campus, and to reinforce the need for reporting all criminal, safety, and rules and regulation violations.
All residence halls have controlled access, and only those students living in a particular unit or room have keys to access those premises. All academic buildings are locked every evening after operational activities cease for the day, with the exception of one computer lab that is available to students 24/7.
Before going off Campus on College sanctioned trips, students are reminded that they are required to adhere to all local, state, and federal laws, as well as rules and regulations established by Brevard College. Those include the school’s policy in regard to drug use, alcohol use and abuse, and underage drinking. Violations of the law, as well as our institution’s rules and regulations are not condoned or tolerated, and students are sanctioned for violations, whether the prohibited activity occurs on or off the Campus.
