Brevard College Bestows 2011 Honors and Awards
Brevard College recently held its annual Honors and Awards Ceremony to honor student, faculty and staff achievement in academics and leadership.
In addition to the campus-wide honors and awards ceremony, students were also recognized during special events hosted by each of the College’s academic divisions.

Campus Life
Outstanding Student Awards were presented to freshman Sarah Mundhenke, sophomore Leighia Eggett, junior Lucy Matthews and senior Cole Altizer.
Sarah Mundhenke, Josh Mower, Chris Shore, Hannah Crain, Caitlin Kennedy, Meagan Crowson and recent graduate Katie Kelleher were recognized for their participation in the North Carolina Activating Citizenship Through Service program, which requires students to complete 300 hours of community service in one year in return for a $1,000 education award.
The Richard A. Adams Outstanding Ambassador Award was presented to Shane Apps for his student recruitment efforts on behalf of the College’s Admissions Office. The Mary Elizabeth and G. Scott Francis Community Service Award was presented to Meagan Crowson for her volunteer efforts on and off campus. Crowson was also recognized for her passion for community and campus service with the Community Impact Student Award.
Student Government Association
The Brevard College Student Government Association (SGA) presented awards to outstanding staff and faculty. Award winners were:
Outstanding Staff Member: Aramark Staff;
Outstanding Coach: Women’s Soccer Coach Shigeyoshi “Sugar” Shinohara;
Fine Arts Faculty Member of the Year: Associate Professor of Art History and Archaeology Anne Chapin;
Humanities Faculty Member of the Year: Assistant Professor of Religious Studies and Coordinator of the Religious Studies Major Ben Zeller;
Social Sciences Faculty Member of the Year: Associate Professor of Psychology Steve Martin;
Math and Science Faculty Member of the Year: Associate Professor of Mathematics Charles Wallis;
Spirit Award: the Brevard College Baseball Team; and
Service to Brevard College Award: Director of Service Initiatives Jessica Blanford.
The Faculty Member of the Year Award was presented to both Associate Professor of Psychology Steve Martin and Associate Professor of Exercise Science and Physiology and Coordinator of the Exercise Science Major Resa Chandler.
Fine Arts Division
Earning individual recognition in the Fine Arts Division were Danielle Burch, Outstanding Art Major; Jennifer Baxter, Outstanding Music Major; and Kara Ontiveros, Outstanding Theatre Major.
Theta Alpha Phi national theater honor society inductees were: Alicia Elias, Caitlin Kennedy, Christina Nelson, Kara Ontiveros, Katherine Parnell, Ryan Riordan, Bethany Tebo, Kelli Tysinger; Adrian Wagner; and Assistant Professor of Theatre Studies Kasendra Bell.
Art
Outstanding Art Awards were presented to Rick Campana, Graphic Design; Dean Mobley, Ceramics; Danielle Burch, Painting; Katherine McKittrick, Photography; and Dylan Wood, Sculpture.
Dylan Wood was recognized for his outstanding contributions to the College’s Art Department.
Scholarship recipients were Ariel Muiselaar, who received the Caroline A. Sweeney Scholarship, and Madeleine Brodsky, who received the Col. and Mrs. Dale O. Wiener Scholarship.
Highest Grade Point Average in Art honors were presented to freshman Grace Skiles; sophomore Mary Kathryn Webb; junior Ariel Muiselaar; and senior Elizabeth Cole.
Music
Earning individual recognition in the Music Department were Craig Brinker, Outstanding Music Performer; Zachery Douglas, Newcomer’s Award and Excellence in Music History Award; Verntasia Finley, Choral Ensemble Award; Joshua Hutchins, Music Theory Achievement Award; Tommy Spittle, Instrumentalist in Ensemble Award; and Olivia Willie, Excellence in Service Award.
Scholarship recipients were Jennifer Baxter, M. Thomas Cousins Award in Music Education; Steven Berry, Johneen Roth Epstein Scholarship; and Joshua Hutchins, Cherie Roth Nate Scholarship.
Highest Grade Point Average in Music honors were presented to freshman Steuart Wainwright, sophomore Joshua Hutchins, junior Craig Brinker and senior Maggie McRae.
Theatre Studies
Earning individual recognition in the Theatre Studies Department were Addison Dent, Newcomers Award and Best Performance by a Theatre Studies Major Actor (The Shape of Things and Lysistrata); Caitlin Kennedy, Best Performance by a Non Theatre Studies Major Actress (Tartuffe and The Shape of Things ); Kait McConomy, Achievement in Design/Tech (Costume Design, The Glass Menagerie); Kara Ontiveros, Best Performance by a Theatre Studies Major Actress (Tartuffe); and Alex Tompkins, Best Performance by a Non Theatre Studies Major Actor (Tartuffe).
Scholarship recipients were Jordan Kahill, Dott Ingram Cofer Theatre Scholarship, and Jennifer Jones-Galyean, Dr. Robert Allwyn White Scholarship.
Highest Grade Point Average in Theatre Studies honors were presented to freshman Jordan Kahill, sophomore Elizabeth Ramsay, junior Christina Nelson and senior Bethany Tebo.
Humanities Division

Sara Carlos received the Mt. Pisgah Award; Robert Forbes and Miro Mustonen, Sustainable Leadership Award; Brian O’Hara was recognized for Outstanding Academic Excellence in Business and Organizational Leadership; and Rebecca Schoonover was presented the Ray Fisher Merit Scholarship.
Business and Organizational Leadership
Earning individual recognition in Business and Organizational Leadership were Brian O’Hara and Miro Mustonen for Exceptional Academic Performance; Robert Forbes and Rebecca Shoonover for Outstanding Academic Performance; and Pauli Jussila, Ronald Patterson and Anna Schlobohm for Meritorious Academic Performance.
Outstanding Academic Achievement honors were also presented to first year Business and Organizational Leadership student Kevin Hamilton as well as second year Business and Organizational Leadership student Seam Stamper.
Scholarship recipients were Alice Klochkova, Anthony Cestrone, Brennan Daniels, Jami Uuttu and Patrick Urmson.
Sigma Beta Delta national business, management and administration honor society recognitions were presented to Tammy Brigman; Henry Erti; Brian O’Hara; Robert Forbes; Miro Mustonen; Ronald Patterson; Anna Schlobohm; and Rebecca Schoonover. Sigma Beta Delta honors were also to six Business and Organizational Leadership faculty members, Cameron Austin, Andrew Baker, Barbara Boerner, Joseph Ippolito, Michael Oliphant and Eva M. Smith.
Athletic Academic Recognitions
Men’s soccer team members Henri Erti, Miro Mustonen, Renato Barbosa, Niclas Stolt, and Scott Schuurman were recognized for receiving Honorable Mentions on the All-South Scholar Region Team chosen by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. The student-athletes were 5 of 30 men to receive such honors.
The women’s soccer team was the recipient of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America Team Academic Award for the 2010 season. Seven members of the women’s soccer team received All- South Regional Scholar Honorable Mentions, including Katie Donohue, Nikki Peacock, Bailey Varley, Chelsea Freeman, Caitlin Hubbard, Rachael Laughlin and Alyssa Caracena.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s 2010 ITA/ Arthur Ashe Leadership and Sportsmanship Award Winner for the Southeast region was presented to Lindsay Shaeffer.
Campus-wide Recognitions
Carol Anne Martinez was recognized for her service to the campus literary magazine, The Chiaroscuro. John Climer and Daniel Heyman were honored for their work as editor-in-chief of The Clarion student newspaper.
Campus-wide recognitions were extended to Treyton Bray, Ruth Calloway, Amanda Coker, Lewis Gaffney, Jordan Kathill, Mallori Lazich, Keith Marek, Adam Martin, Brandon Millet, Christine Moran, Kenneth Ramey and Caleb Welborn for their BCE 111: First Year Seminar presentations.
Cole Altizer, Sara Daughtery, Cori Emory, Robert Forbes, Audrey Hamilton, Karen Howell, Bryan Koffman, Karen Love, Faye Moser, Kara Ontiveros, Kathryn Powell, Lindsay Shaeffer, Brooke Sturgill and Harmony Whitt were recognized for their academic success within the College’s Honors Program.
The Environmental Stewardship Award was presented to Jana Eilermann for her work to educate others on and off campus environmental issues. Margaret Ann Medley was recognized for her sustainable living work with the Environmental Sustainability Award.

Faculty Recognitions
Six faculty members were recognized for receiving promotions. Betsy Burrows, Kathryn Gresham and Kyle Lusk were promoted to associate professor with tenure. Barbara Boerner, Jennifer Frick-Ruppert and James Reynolds were promoted from associate professor to professor.
Assistant Professor Ben Zeller was named the 2010-2012 Brevard College recipient of the United Methodist Exemplary Teacher Award. Zeller, who received a certificate and a $500 check provided by the United Methodist Church’s General Board of Higher Education and Ministry, was recognized for his excellence in teaching; civility and concern for students and colleagues; commitment to value-centered education; and outstanding service to students, the institution and the community.
A separate Brevard College Athletics Department Award Ceremony will be held on May 2.
