The Brevard College Art Department will host an opening reception for a photography exhibition featuring the work of guest artist Lawrence Lohr on Friday, Sept. 6.
The opening reception will take place at 5:30 p.m. in Spiers Gallery in the Sims Art Center on the campus of Brevard College.
The exhibition, entitled “From the Hills to the Mills: The Carolina Piedmont Textile Story in Photography,” documents the present state of what was once the vibrant economy of the United States textile industry. The self-taught photographer’s haunting black-and-white work captures remnants of that industry, including dilapidated mills and mill villages found in North and South Carolina and Georgia. Many of the photographs from the exhibition are included in Lohr’s book of essays on the roles of energy and labor in the Southern textile industry.
Lohr, Professor Emeritus of Chemistry at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and an adjunct professor at the University of North Carolina in Asheville, has exhibited his work regionally as well as in Michigan. His photography has also been recognized with Best of Show and first prizes in both landscape and people categories by the Transylvania Arts Council.
The reception as well as exhibit visitations are free to the public.
Gallery hours for the show are 8 a.m. until 3 p.m. weekdays when the College is in session. The exhibit will be on display until Sept. 27.
Spiers Gallery is a contemporary 1,500 square foot gallery located within the Sims Art Center on the Brevard College campus.
