Why Study English?

English majors learn to think critically about information and situations, articulate their thoughts clearly, and use effective writing techniques, all skills employers value in most fields and industries.

A major in English will prepare you for a wide range of careers and post-baccalaureate studies, including law school, medical school, library and information sciences, or business programs. Additionally, 80% of employers believe that graduates need the broad knowledge that an English Major offers.

About the English Program

  • Become a published writer, editor, and designer. Contribute to, edit, and publish our “Best-of-Show” award-winning student-run newspaper, The Clarion, or the literary and arts journal Chiaroscuro.
  • Participate in a national writers’ conference. Assist in planning and managing the Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference or apply to attend as a workshop participant.
  • Become a stronger reader and writer. From introductory to advanced writing courses, our curriculum is writing and reading intensive, allowing you to practice and hone your analysis and writing skills.
  • Engage in active and timely scholarship. Submit and present scholarly work at an academic or literary conference, or attend a regional or national college media conference.
  • Participate in our literary community. Plan and perform a reading of your original work on campus. Meet and learn from working writers and scholars through our West Lecture and Visiting Poets and Writers Series.
  • Learn to teach. Serve as a teaching assistant in an English class, as a peer mentor in FYE, or as a learning consultant in the college’s Experiential Learning Commons.
  • Develop skills in digital media and communication. Plan and record a podcast, shoot and direct a video, research and create a travel blog, or write and produce an original play for your senior capstone project.

English majors receive a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in English with a required emphasis in one of the following areas:

You can choose to pair your English degree with a 9-12 English Teacher Licensure. Minors in English or Creative Writing  are also available.

MINOR IN CREATIVE WRITING

Creative writing offers gateways into new worlds and possibilities as well as practical communication and language skills. You’ll learn how to become a multi-genre writer, explore opportunities in editing and publication, and become an active member of our literary community.

WHAT YOU'LL EXPERIENCE IN THE CREATIVE WRITING MINOR

  • Write and revise in multiple genres. Our curriculum offers writing-intensive courses in fiction, nonfiction, poetry, playwriting, and hybrid writing, with a focus on writing process, scholarship, and revision.
  • Become a published writer, editor, and designer. Contribute to, edit, and publish our “Best-of-Show” award-winning student-run newspaper The Clarion or the literary and arts journal Chiaroscuro.
  • Attend or plan a national writers’ conference. Assist in planning and managing the Looking Glass Rock Writers’ Conference, a nationally recognized writers’ workshop, or apply to attend as a workshop participant, where you will work with world-renowned award-winning faculty.
  • Participate in our literary community. Plan and perform a reading of your original writing on campus. Meet and learn from working writers and scholars through our West Lecture and Visiting Poets and Writers Series.
