The Office of Community and Service Initiatives hosts weekly, monthly, and annual special events for students, staff, and community. These events focus on providing hands-on service-learning opportunities to BC students, increasing social and cultural awareness, promoting social action, and providing valuable services to Brevard and the surrounding community. The CSI calendar offers a wide variety of fun, challenging, and diverse events at many times throughout the school year, so Brevard students always have the opportunity to fit service into their schedule and interests. Here’s some examples of special events and service learning opportunities hosted by CSI.
- Move A Mountain Day
Move A Mountain Day (or MAMD) is a 16-year-old tradition at Brevard College. Each August during Welcome Week, new BC students, faculty, staff, and community volunteers join together to participate in service projects at app. 15 sites across Brevard and the surrounding Transylvania County. For a half day we celebrate our motto “Learn in Order to Serve” and pass down a tradition of service and life-long learning to new students. On our most recent Move A Mountain Day, over 260 students, faculty, and staff served for a total of 80 hours!
- Mini Move a Mountain Day
This event occurs once a month, and is a continuation of the annual Move A Mountain Day (or MAMD). Mini MAMD offers students a half day of service at smaller projects. Some recent MMAMD projects have included a river clean-up, Habitat for Humanity, and packing food at a local food bank.
- Alternative Break Trips
During Fall and Spring breaks, CSI provides students with an opportunity to travel and explore other cultures while providing valuable services to that community. During the trip, student meet new people, work closely with service organizations, establish teamwork, and serve others. Student leaders work closely with the CMSI staff coordinator to organize and plan each trip. Recent trips have included working at a refugee center in Comer, GA, working with Habitat for Humanity, and a trip to St. Simon’s Island in Georgia.
- MLK Celebration
Brevard College partners with the community to honor the legacy of a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Recent events in this celebration have included a free interfaith prayer brunch and joint worship service at Bethel “A” Baptist Church, ** MLK challenge, “Walk to Change” (a civil rights reflection and celebration march across town), and a community-wide MLK celebration in the Porter Center. ** MLK Challenge is a student-led day of service in honor of MLK’s legacy. Brevard students partner with the Rise and Shine Freedom School to work with local non-profits and gather funds, materials, and resources needed to complete their projects.
- Hunger and Homeless Awareness Week
This week is a national movement in November that promotes hunger, poverty, and homelessness awareness. During this week BC has particpated in food drives, a “Hunger Banquet,” and a chance for students to personally experience an evening as a homeless person.
